Planning Achieved: Basildon Town Centre
Re-generation of Basildon Town Centre, including 2,800 homes alongside a redeveloped shopping centre in Basildon.
Originally designed to the New Town principles, the existing public realm has a distinctive, modernist character that is very much of the place and of importance in maintaining a sense of localness in the regeneration of Basildon. Eastgate Quarter is the largest site in the wider major regeneration of this town centre. The vision for Eastgate Quarter was developed in collaboration with Future Cities, taking cues from the Placemaking Strategy for Basildon.
The public realm in Eastgate Quarter plays a key role in the reinventing of Basildon as a functioning, flexible and activated town centre. Welcoming, strategically located and navigable gateways, including improvement of the transport hub, creates a legible, safe and connected public realm environment. Multifunctional streets and open inclusive environments create space for local and new communities to thrive.
Green infrastructure, established via ecological corridors, incorporation of SuDS features and placing biodiversity at the forefront of design, creates a verdant and connected landscape. Health and wellbeing of all living beings, including human and animal, is supported through a green, planted environment that responds to nature and intrinsic biophila needs, including opportunities for playable and active landscapes. Improved permeability and pedestrian and cycle links, electric vehicle charging points and providing ease of access to sustainable transport options is promoted as a priority in Eastgate Quarter.
