Capturing the spirit of Manchester through four typologies typical of urban environments.
The Manchester Garden
Chelsea Flower Show
We were successful in our bid to design the Manchester Garden at the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show. The garden employed the themes of resilience and adaptability, representing the dynamic, forward thinking attitude of the people of Manchester, whilst demonstrating how we can future-proof our cities with adaptable and resilient planting strategies.
The planting strategy was to split the garden into four typologies typical of urban environments: Urban, Parks, Remediation and SuDS. Plants were carefully selected that would thrive in these environments and enhance the urban green infrastructure, with further contributions of the species chosen to include attractiveness to pollinating insects, air and soil purification properties and edibility. Whitworth sandstone, a stone local to the North West, was used to create a curved path leading to a central space and stepping stones within the water feature.
The garden was awarded a Silver medal by the RHS as the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show with the judges commending the choice and style of planting, the innovative paving layout and the co-ordination involved in transferring the plans into reality.
